Effective Keyword Research & List Preparation (for PPC) - Day 2

Stage Two - Building Our List

Good morning :o) - hope you're having a great day!

Let's get right down to the next step, which is building our list of kwds for our campaign.

As with the other days, I will say that you should have everything else sorted out before you join us today. So just make sure you're familiar with the fist few steps and come back for the next one.

Now that you've read the sales page and collected the main theme phrases - it's time for Wordtracker. The phrases you collected thus far will serve you to understand the type of phrases you'll need overall, but now we get to harvest as many phrases as possible.

You can use Wordtracker's free version or their paid version. They are both very good - especially the free one - it gives you a lot for free. The paid version however, has many more useful features that will help you take your keyword research tot he next level.

So I'll use the paid version for my research, because it is a lot easier to collect individual kwds with it (the free version only displays them for you), and because I have a subscription :o). If you choose to use the free version, just copy and paste your chosen phrases into an Excel file - that would be ok too.

You'd want to use the lowest common denominator as a starting point, because you want to get as many variations as possible. So I started with "lose weight" and "burn fat".

Side Note: Don't get confused here - I know I was talking about just using the "transactional" search phrases - I meant that. But now we want to generate a wide list - as wide as possible. It will help us in many ways now and later, so just bear with me and follow through with the steps - you will soon see I haven't gone mad… yet ;o)

I opened up Wordtracker, I'll use the "Keyword Universe" section to start my search (it has the most do-it-yourself flexibility of all the sections) and typed in the first basic phrase to see what results I'd get.

Wordtracker came up with hundreds of results - we won't end up using all of these, but I wanted to take you the long way around for two main reasons:

  1. to show you how to use your full list to select excellent negative kwds, and
  2. to show you one of the best kwd manipulation tools I have ever owned.

1) How to use your full list to select excellent negative kwds.

This is a technique I learned a while ago from one of the best AdWords guides to ever be written - aptly named - "The Definitive Guide to Google AdWords" (by Perry Marshall).

Now, first you need to actually compile your big list.

You do that by typing in the most generic phrase you can think of what correctly describes the product you are selling. In our case we started off with one of the two phrases - "lose fat".

This gave us many results. Some of these will be irrelevant to us, but we now have to go down the lines and decide which ones we'll click on to get some more specific results.

You dig into a specific phrase from the left panel by clicking on it.

Wordtracker then displays the results on the right hand side with estimated number of searches next to each phrase. To add a single word from the right hand side list you just need to click on the underlined kwd.

You can see that at the bottom in the middle your kwd shopping cart is filling up.

Side Note: Here would be a good place to look at what else around fat loss the searchers are looking for online. You can get many ideas for new products and info to sell to a "hungry crowd" right here…

Cool - so I will go through the LHS and click on the following phrases:

  • 6 pack abs
  • abdominal workouts
  • abs exercises
  • abs training
  • abs training programs
  • best way to lose belly fat
  • best way to lose fat

Each time I click on a phrase, a bunch more detailed phrases come up on the right. I will just grab all of those for now, by clicking on: "Click here to add all keywords to your basket".

So you'll keep going clicking on each word and adding the words on. Don't worry about duplicates because Wordtracker will eliminate those as it adds new phrases. This is the difference, between using the paid and free versions.

The paid version, just makes things quicker and easier - I suppose that's why they charge us for it…

Right, I've finished going through all the phrases now and I have collected 5530 kwds (phrases) from my one starting phrase, but it did actually include most of the others I had selected - so I feel at this stage I don't need to go looking for any others.

Note that I did say the ebook we've chosen to market is a bit of a brand name in itself. So I took a chance to use the actual name to see if there are searches registered for it and it came up there are - so I'm also including those phrases as well - they will form a different group later on.

Side Note: these phrases would be very valuable and if we are allowed to bid on them they will convert really well - because they are so targeted. However, it seems they are also already part of the 5530 that I have collected previously so our job here's done :o)

I exported my list into Excel now and am ready to start cleaning it up.

Cool, so this is really it for today.

I want to make a distinct break here, before we start cleaning our list, just so you have some time to think of what we've done today and make sense of it.

Why not even go and create a few mock lists - see if you remember all the steps…

OK, tomorrow we go on to cleaning our list, or step two of the two that i listed for you int he beginning - I have a really 'neat' tool to share with you. It has been by far one of the most valuable purchases I have made in terms of my kwd list manipulations…

See you back here tomorrow.
